3 Things Your OBGYN Will Talk With You About At Your Postpartum Check Up

Around 6 weeks after you have had your baby, you will have scheduled an appointment to go in and meet with your OBGYN. The purpose of this appointment is to check to make sure that you are in good health both mentally and physically, and to help you out with any and all questions that you may have about your post-baby body. This article will discuss 3 things your OBGYN will talk with you about at your postpartum check up.

Vaginal Bleeding

It is very common for women to bleed after having their baby, however, this bleeding should only last for a certain period of time. The bleeding also shouldn't be excessive, but should slowly get lighter and lighter. By the time you go in for your postpartum checkup, your bleeding should be very light, if not entirely gone. Your OBGYN is going to ask you about your bleeding, and is also going to check your vagina and your uterus to make sure everything is healing nicely. This allows them to see if anything has gone wrong to indicate why you are still bleeding. For example, they may determine that your stitches didn't dissolve like they were supposed to, and this caused you to still bleed. They can then fix this issue by removing your stitches for you.

Postpartum Depression

Another important thing that your OBGYN is going to discuss with you is postpartum depression. This is something that effects many women after pregnancy, and it is so important that it is addressed and properly treated. If you have any feelings of despair, resentment towards your baby, or otherwise don't feel like you can emotionally handle the responsibility of being a mother, then you should share these feelings with your OBGYN. They will be able to get you the help that you need in order to begin the process of feeling more stable and capable emotionally. Whether this be in the form of therapy, medication, or some other alternative method.

Birth Control

Your OBGYN, one like Heart Of Florida OB/GYN Associates, is also going to discuss birth control with you and will likely explain to you that even though you may be nursing your baby, you can still get pregnant. They will tell you what your different options are for birth control, and will then let you decide what you would like to do. Having an idea in mind beforehand of what you would like to do can be beneficial because then you can ask your OBGYN questions about the birth control method that you are considering and they can answer them for you.
